Bio
Cristina De Middel er en spansk-belgisk fotograf født i Alicante i 1975.
Etter å ha studert kunst, beveget hun seg bort fra kompleksiteten i det moderne kunstneriske språket for å gjøre sin lidenskap for fotografi om til en lidenskap for å dokumentere verden på en sannferdig måte. Hun var fotojournalist og jobbet for spanske lokalaviser og NGO-er som Røde Kors og Leger Uten Grenser i nesten 10 år, og dekket kriser i blant annet Syria, Haiti og Bangladesh.
I 2012 produserte hun "The Afronauts", en fiktiv serie inspirert av det virkelige, men utrolige prosjektet Zambia hadde for å komme til månen midt under romkappløpet og den kalde krigen. Prosjektet fokuserte på de lave forventningene det vestlige publikum hadde til det afrikanske kontinentets kapasitet etter flere tiår med feilaktig fremstilling og bidrag til stereotypier gjennom fotografi.
Boken fra "The Afronauts"-serien, som hun selvpubliserte, befestet hennes karriere og et språk som stiller spørsmål ved det delikate og ladede forholdet mellom fotografi og "sannhet". Samme år ble hun tildelt Infinity Award for beste publikasjon ved International Center of Photography i New York, PhotoFolio Review Award ved Rencontres d'Arles, og hun var finalist i den prestisjetunge Deutsche Börse Award for fotografi.
Serien "The Afronauts" har nå blitt utstilt mer enn 50 ganger i museer og institusjoner som Metropolitan Museum i NYC, The Hasselblad Foundation, San Francisco MoMa og Centre Pompidou i Paris.
Siden 2012 har Cristina utgitt mer enn 14 bøker og stilt ut bredt på de 5 kontinentene. I 2017 mottok hun National Award for Photography i Spania og ble en del av Magnum Photos-byrået, der hun har vært president siden 2022.
Cristina er også et aktivt medlem av fotomiljøet, og bortsett fra å kuratere festivaler som Lagos Photo (2015 og 2016), er hun nå styremedlem i Deustche Börse Photography Foundation og i Vist Projects, en panamerikansk plattform som gir synlighet til latinamerikanske visuelle skapere og utforsker mulighetene det fotografiske språket har for å diversifisere synspunktene i vår visuelle forståelse av verden. Hun har også et forlag (This Book is True), og hun promoterer kontinuerlig initiativer for å støtte potensialet fotoboken har som et visuelt historiefortellingsfenomen.
Cristina er nå bosatt i Brasil og utvikler kontinuerlig nye prosjekter.

Fotograf Cristina De Middel utforsker kraften i historiefortelling gjennom lagdelte visuelle narrativer. Ved å blande dokumentariske og konseptuelle tilnærminger, forvandler hun vanlige øyeblikk til fantasifulle kunstverk. I sitt foredrag med tittelen "Life and Miracles" deler hun sin reise fra tidlige prosjekter til nyere kreasjoner, og tilbyr innsikt i hvordan man finner inspirasjon i hverdagen og forvandler det til overbevisende bilder.

Bio
Cristina De Middel is a Spanish-Belgian photographer born in Alicante in 1975.
After studying Fine Arts, she moved away from the complexity of contemporary artistic language to turn her passion for photography into a passion for documenting the world in a straight way. She was a photojournalist working for Spanish local newspapers and NGOs like the Red Cross and Doctors without Borders for almost 10 years, covering crisis in Syria, Haiti and Bangladesh amongst others.
In 2012 she produced "The Afronauts", a fictional series inspired by the real, yet unbelievable project that Zambia had to conquer the moon in the middle of the Space Race and the Cold War. The project focused on the low expectations that the Western audience had towards the capacities of the African continent after decades of misrepresenting it and contributing to the stereotype with photography.
The book of " The Afronauts" series that she self-published consolidated her career and a language that questions the delicate and loaded relationship there is between photography and "truth". That same year she was awarded with the Infinity Award for the best publication at the International Center of Photography in New York, the PhotoFolio Review Award at the Rencontres d´Arles, and she was a finalist of the prestigious Deutsche Börse Award for photography.
The series The Afronauts has now been exhibited more than 50 times in museums and Institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum in NYC, The Hasselblad Foundation, the San Francisco MoMa, or the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Since 2012 Cristina has published more than 14 books and exhibited widely in the 5 continents. In 2017, she received the National Award for Photography in Spain and became part of Magnum Photos agency, which she is the president since 2022.
Cristina is also an active member of the photographic community and, apart from curating festivals like Lagos Photo (2015 and 2016), she is now a board member at the Deustche Börse Photography Foundation and at Vist Projects, a Pan-American platform that gives visibility to Latin American visual creators and explores the possibilities of the photographic language to diversify the points of view in the visual understanding we have of the world. She also has a publishing house (This Book is True) and she is continually promoting initiatives to support the potential of the photobook as a visual story-telling phenomenon.
Cristina is now based in Brazil and is continuously developing new projects

Photographer Cristina De Middel explores the power of storytelling through layered visual narratives. Blending documentary and conceptual approaches, she transforms ordinary moments into imaginative works of art. In her talk titled Life and Miracles, she shares her journey from early projects to recent creations, offering insights on finding inspiration in everyday life and turning it into compelling imagery.
