Luisa Dörr

LUISA DÖRR / VII

LECTURE - HOUSE OF LITERATURE - THURSDAY 8th OF JUNE1900

Brazilian Luisa Dörr’s homeland is characterized by contradiction and great inequality. Now she’s coming to Fredrikstad to tell stories about young women, racism, religion - and about Maysa (13) and her big dream of becoming Miss Brazil.

Luisa Dörr doesn’t need to travel to remote nations to photograph. She excels instead in finding stories right outside her own home, in her own country, today. And often it’s the mobile telephone in her pocket that’s the preferred camera.

Luisa Dörr (b. 1988) has become known internationally in the last year. She is a member of the photo agency VII’s mentor program.

Maysa won the state title of Young Miss São Paulo "Black Beauty," a separate title from Young Miss São Paulo, created to encourage black girls to participate. Racism is, unfortunately, very common, even with most of our people being a mix of several different ethnicities. It's not common seeing many black people in beauty contests. Luana her sister decided she also wants be a model. Luisa Dörr / VII

Maria Vitoria (8) attends the Christian Congregation of Brazilil since birth. She dreams of being organist; like her mother. In Christian Congregation of Brazil women can not play any instrument besides the organ; and there is only one organ in every church. Sometimes they wait several months to play the instrument.
